When your air conditioner stops cooling it is miserable — but before you call a $200 service technician there are several things you can check yourself that solve the problem more than half the time.
This sounds obvious but it is the most common cause. Make sure it is set to COOL not HEAT or FAN. Check that the set temperature is lower than the current room temperature. Replace the batteries — a weak battery signal causes erratic thermostat behavior more often than people realize.
A severely clogged air filter restricts airflow so much that the system cannot cool effectively. Pull out your filter — if you cannot see light through it it needs replacing. A $10 filter at the hardware store fixes this immediately. Change it every 60 days going forward.
Your HVAC system has its own breaker — often two breakers, one for the air handler inside and one for the condenser outside. Go to your electrical panel and check that both are fully in the ON position. Reset any tripped breakers.
Go outside and look at the large unit. Is it running? Is it covered in ice? Is the fan spinning? A frozen coil means restricted airflow — turn the system to FAN ONLY for two hours to let it thaw, then replace the filter before restarting. Clear any grass, leaves, or debris from around the unit.
Your AC removes humidity from the air and drains it through a small white PVC pipe usually near the air handler. If this line clogs the system shuts itself off as a safety measure. Find the drain line and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar down it to clear any algae buildup.
Set a phone reminder to change your air filter every 60 days. This single habit prevents the majority of HVAC service calls and can extend the life of your system by years.
If none of these fixes work the issue is likely low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or an electrical component. Refrigerant requires an EPA certified technician by law. If your system is over 15 years old and failing repeatedly it may be time for replacement rather than repair.
