Step by Step Instructions

1

Turn Off the Power and Test

Turn off the circuit breaker for the outlet. Use a voltage tester or plug in a lamp to confirm power is off. Never skip this step — working on a live outlet is extremely dangerous.

2

Remove the Old Outlet

Unscrew the cover plate and remove it. Unscrew the two screws holding the outlet to the box and pull the outlet forward gently. You will see wires attached to the side screws. Take a photo before disconnecting anything.

3

Disconnect the Wires

Loosen the screws on the side of the outlet and remove each wire. Note which color goes where — black to brass screw, white to silver screw, bare copper to green screw. Your photo from step 2 is your reference.

4

Connect to the New Outlet

Connect wires to the new outlet matching the same positions — black to brass, white to silver, bare copper to green. Tighten screws firmly. Gently fold the wires back into the box and push the outlet in.

5

Secure and Test

Screw the outlet to the box and attach the cover plate. Restore power at the breaker. Test with a lamp or outlet tester. For GFCI outlets press the TEST button then RESET button to confirm it works correctly.
