Learn how to patch holes in drywall like a pro. Covers nail holes, small holes, and large damage. No experience needed.
Small holes under 1/2 inch — use spackling compound directly. Holes from 1/2 inch to 4 inches — use a patch kit or California patch method. Holes over 4 inches — cut back to studs and install a new drywall piece.
Remove any loose paper or drywall around the hole. Sand the edges smooth. Clean away any dust with a damp cloth. For larger holes cut the damaged area into a clean square shape using a drywall saw.
For small holes apply spackling with a putty knife, overfilling slightly. For medium holes use a self-adhesive mesh patch from a patch kit then apply joint compound over it. Feather the edges out at least 6 inches beyond the patch.
Allow joint compound to dry completely — usually 24 hours. Sand smooth with 120 grit sandpaper. Apply a second thin coat if needed. Repeat until the patch is invisible when you hold a light at an angle to the wall.
Apply a coat of drywall primer to the patched area before painting. This prevents the patch from showing through the paint as a dull spot. Once dry paint to match your wall color.
