A leaky roof causes water damage fast — every hour it leaks the problem gets worse. Here is how to find the source, make a temporary emergency fix, and handle the permanent repair safely.
Never start on the roof until you know where the leak is coming from. Go into your attic with a flashlight and look for water stains, wet insulation, or daylight coming through. Mark the spot. Remember water travels — the stain on your ceiling may be several feet away from the actual entry point.
If it is actively raining or the damage is severe cover the area from outside with a heavy duty polyethylene tarp. Secure it with 2x4 boards and screws over the ridge — never just lay it flat. A properly secured tarp stops water immediately and gives you time to make a permanent repair safely.
Wait for dry weather and check the forecast before going on the roof. Use a sturdy extension ladder secured at the base. Wear rubber soled shoes. Work with a helper on the ground. Look for cracked, curled, or missing shingles, damaged flashing around chimneys and vents, and clogged or damaged gutters.
Slide a flat pry bar under the damaged shingle and lift the nails. Slide the old shingle out and slide the new one in its place. Nail it with four roofing nails just below the tar strip. Seal the nail heads with roofing cement. Press down the overlapping shingles.
Flashing is the thin metal strip around chimneys, skylights, and vents — it is the most common source of leaks. If you see gaps apply roofing cement under lifted sections and press them back down. For severely damaged flashing the metal needs to be replaced — this is a job for a roofer if you are not comfortable with it.
Most roof leaks occur around penetrations — chimneys, vents, skylights, and pipe boots — not in the flat field of the roof. Always check these areas first. A $5 tube of roofing cement fixes the majority of flashing leaks.
Never get on a steep or wet roof without proper safety equipment and training. If your roof is over 20 years old, has widespread damage, or you see sagging or structural damage call a licensed roofing contractor immediately. Falls from roofs are one of the leading causes of serious home injury.
