Step by Step Instructions

1

Try Boiling Water First

For kitchen drains clogged with grease slowly pour a full kettle of boiling water down the drain. Wait a minute and repeat. This often dissolves grease clogs completely with zero cost.

2

Remove and Clean the Stopper

In bathroom sinks the stopper collects hair and soap scum. Unscrew or pull out the stopper and clean off all debris. This fixes the majority of slow bathroom sink drains instantly.

3

Use a Drain Snake

Feed a drain snake or zip-it tool into the drain and rotate it as you push it in. When you feel resistance rotate more to grab the clog. Pull it out slowly — the clog usually comes out in one piece. Repeat until clear.

4

Try Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of white vinegar down the drain. Cover and wait 15 minutes while it fizzes. Flush with hot water. This works well for mild clogs and deodorizes at the same time.

5

Check the P-Trap

Place a bucket under the curved pipe beneath the sink. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand and remove the P-trap. Clean it out and reinstall. This solves clogs that are too deep for a snake to reach.
