Replace an existing light fixture with a ceiling fan. Step by step wiring guide with safety tips for a professional result.
Turn off the circuit breaker for the room where you are working. Use a voltage tester on the existing wires before touching anything. Never assume power is off without testing.
Standard electrical boxes cannot support a ceiling fan. You need a fan-rated box that is either attached to a joist or uses a brace bar rated for fan weight. If the existing box is not fan-rated replace it before proceeding.
Follow the manufacturer instructions to assemble the motor housing, attach the blades to the blade brackets, and mount the brackets to the motor. Do as much assembly on the ground as possible before mounting.
Hang the motor from the mounting bracket using the hook provided — this lets you work with both hands. Connect black to black, white to white, and green or bare copper to green or bare copper using wire nuts. Tuck wires into the canopy.
Secure the canopy to the mounting bracket. Attach the light kit if included. Restore power at the breaker. Test all fan speeds and the light before installing the light bulbs and globe.
