A squeaky door is one of the easiest home repairs you can make — and one of the most annoying to live with. Most squeaks are fixed in under 10 minutes with things already in your house.
Open and close the door slowly while watching each hinge. The squeak almost always comes from one specific hinge — usually the top one. Tighten all visible hinge screws first with a screwdriver. A loose hinge causes more squeaks than anything else.
Open the door fully and tap the hinge pin upward with a hammer and nail to remove it. Wipe the pin clean with a rag. Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly, WD-40, 3-IN-ONE oil, or even a bar of soap. Reinsert the pin and work the door back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant.
If the screws spin without tightening the holes are stripped. Remove the screw and stuff the hole with wooden toothpicks dipped in wood glue. Let dry for an hour then snap them off flush. Drive the screw back in and it will grip the wood again like new.
If the door rubs against the frame it creates friction and squeaks. Look for shiny spots on the door edge where it contacts the frame. Use sandpaper or a hand plane to remove a small amount of material from the binding spot. Work slowly — removing too much leaves a gap.
If hinges are tight and lubricated but the squeak persists the door frame may have shifted slightly. Look at the gap around the door — it should be even all the way around. If the door sags on one side remove the bottom hinge and add a cardboard shim behind it to adjust the alignment.
Vaseline petroleum jelly is the best long-lasting hinge lubricant — it does not drip, does not attract dust, and lasts for years. WD-40 works immediately but wears off quickly and can actually attract dirt over time.
If your door will not close at all or the frame appears warped or cracked this could indicate a foundation settling issue or water damage in the door frame. These are bigger structural problems worth having a contractor assess.
